This programme is for learners employed in the distribution, pressure control and measurement sectors of the gas industry. It recognises the skills and knowledge required by the New Zealand gas industry for certification as a trade operative assistant.


This qualification involves on and off-job training, requiring graduates to complete four key courses in the following:

  • Fire safety
  • First aid
  • Gas distribution induction
  • General networks

Certificates of competence

The members of the Gas Association of New Zealand (GANZ) have created a minimum set of competency requirements for working in the reticulated gas industry (natural gas and/or LPG) and in the distribution and Gas Measurement System (GMS) sectors. Certificates of Competence (CoC) are issued by MITO on behalf of GANZ.

The cost of issuing a Gas CoC card is $30.60 (GST inclusive). There is an industry requirement for refresher training to be completed prior to renewal.
