MITO Launches Commercial Road Transport Scholarships for 2024

Professional training is now more accessible to road transport drivers

MITO has teamed up with “Road to Success” consortium of Transporting NZ, National Road Carriers, New Zealand Trucking Association, Log Transport Safety Council and in partnership with the Inspiring Future Foundation to provide scholarships for truck drivers to gain a formal qualification.

These scholarships represent an exceptional opportunity to empower the workforce and enhance employee professional development within the road transport industry.

Designed to support employees as they actively learn new skills on-the-job, the scholarships aim to assist individuals in advancing their careers and achieving national qualifications within the industry. Through a combination of practical experience and structured learning, learners can broaden their skill set and contribute to the growth and sustainability of the sector.

"We are excited to offer these scholarships, reflecting our dedication to supporting the road transport industry in developing its workforce. MITO remains committed to ensuring continuous support for the industry's workforce development every step of the way,” says MITO Executive Director Verna Niao.

The “Road to Success” programme provides and promotes a tertiary qualification pathway for new and experienced truck drivers, as well as recognising diversity in our industry and promoting the industry as a great career option for our future workforce.

“The scholarships offer great support to companies investing in their people and more importantly, having the level of development and competency recognised as reaching an industry agreed national level. Embedding driver qualifications in our sector is an important structural change that will help secure the long-term future of our workforce,” says Dom Kalasih, Interim Chief Executive, Transporting New Zealand.

“As an industry association we are passionate about inspiring the next generation to further advance their career in the road transport industry. The scholarship initiative is a great way to promote the industry as a career choice to our future workforce,” adds Dave Boyce, Chief Executive, New Zealand Trucking Association.

“Through these scholarships we are encouraging participation in workforce development and skill recognition, empowering our workforce, that will continue to drive innovation and excellence within the road transport sector,” comments Justin Tighe-Umbers, Chief Executive National Road Carrier.

The scholarships offer sound investment to companies, supporting the development of skilled employees and paving the way for an appealing career path for drivers,” adds Warwick Wilshier, Chairman LTSC.

Joining forces across the industry reaffirms mutual commitment to advancing professional training and education within the road transport sector, ensuring a safer, more efficient, and more sustainable future for New Zealand's transport industry.
