Fraser Pattie wasn’t entirely sure what he wanted to do when he left school. He’d always assumed he would go to university, but is now enjoying a career in the trades and services.
A career in the trade industries is a great choice! Combined, MITO’s industries employ over 155,000 New Zealanders or 7% of the workforce. There are significant employment opportunities for young people who are keen to build a rewarding career. Through an apprenticeship or on-the-job training programme, you’ll gain qualifications and practical skills and experience in the workplace, earn while you learn, and have no student loan to repay.
MITO offers career pathways for secondary school students right through to management qualifications within the industries we serve. With a MITO training programme or apprenticeship, you’ll have everything you need to learn new skills, and gain a formal qualification.
An apprenticeship is training done on-the-job. It is tertiary education, like university, except your learning happens in the workplace through a mix of practical and theory assessment. You gain skills from day one and when you’ve completed your apprenticeship, you gain a nationally-recognised qualification and a job you're already qualified to do! The length of your apprenticeship varies depending on your training programme and industry. Most take between 3 or 4 years to complete. Apprenticeships can be completed within a wide range of industries with employers from large national companies to smaller local businesses. The benefits of an apprenticeship or on-the-job training are: What’s better than getting paid to get qualified? Having your fees paid for you too! The Government's fees free policy also applies to apprenticeships and industry training - which means if you're eligible, you won't have to pay training fees for your first two years! That's double the incentive to consider a rewarding career in the trades and services industries! To start an apprenticeship or training programme through MITO you need to be already employed in one of our industries with an employer who is able to support you in your training. Take a look at the Find a Job page or View our helpful tips on how to find a job. Discuss your options with your school's career advisor or Gateway co-ordinator, or contact MITO for more information on a MITO apprenticeship or training programme.
