“It was surprising to get offered a job at 17 years old! The cadetship was very enlightening and it definitely opened my eyes to the opportunities that are available within the industry,” says Maree. The 24-year-old started her freight forwarding career through Kelston Girls’ College’s Gateway programme, which enables students to gain work experience in their chosen industry. Maree was placed at CEVA Logistics (NZ) Ltd, in Auckland, and at the end of the placement was offered a cadetship.

In 2013, Maree completed National Certificates in Freight Forwarding (Freight Administration and International Freight Forwarding) through MITO.

“I definitely learnt a lot from my studies. The qualifications cover a great deal of theory that is applicable to the industry,” says Maree.

Mat Vermeulen, CEVA Logistics’ New Zealand Country Manager, says that Maree’s study has been a real advantage. “The qualifications she achieved have given her a great understanding of freight forwarding. Study has exposed her to different areas within the industry, and has helped her decide which field to specialise in.”

Maree is now employed as a LEAN Quality and Compliance Coordinator, where she works on continuous improvement projects and ensures that CEVA Logistics’ New Zealand sites are compliant with quality and regulatory requirements.

Her long term goal is to become a LEAN Expert—and her MITO qualifications, current role and studies towards her Graduate Business Diploma certainly stand her in very good stead to realise this goal!
